Tribal Experimentation.

Amasumpa (bumps) - Tembu Girls.

Here I have tried to recreate the scarifcation Amasumpa's made by the Tebu girls. The two methods below I have chosen are Tubeplast and wax. I have then tried different methods of colouring to see what/if any works better than others.

Tubeplast.

This was a very fast process but did not give crisp clean finsih to the bumps which worked well as the scarification bumps were symmetrical and even.

The down side to this product is that you have to work very fast because you do not have much working time, plus you d not want to waste product.

This is the better skin tone matching colour i have done with the skin illustrator improving from last unit which is developing my skills.

Here I applied grease paint over the top to add dimention but in a thicker application not a fine build up that is created with the illustrator. Comparing this to the asumpa's bumps it looks similar, on the left it is with a small layer on which I think looks alot better then when I stippled on more. It adds depth without looking blotchy. I think this material works really well for this tribal look, i am very happy with the outcome.

Wax.

This did not work well, when the sealer was dry it peeled away at the edges and with the placement where the arm twists it just lifted away before I even had chance to apply colour. If I was to do this again I would use a small amount of spirit gum on before applying the wax to help support it.

Latex directly from the sculpt.

This would be fine for a theatrical context however not for close up work. The endes didn't bleed seamlessly int the skin so were very obvious when coloured. I also tried skin illustrator to colour the skin which unfortunatly looked very light which asgainst the heavy latex material.doesn't look right.

Silicone from a flat piece.

This piece ripped when demoulding, due to the layers of cap plastic not beling thick enough. So the edges aren't as invisable as how I would like them.

The size and shape works really well coloured and represents the asumpa's correctly, which is what I was trying to aim for.

Colouring with the illustrator is something I have always struggled with on plai skin tone pieces however I feel this is my best yet to date. Seen in the image to the left the colours blend well into the skin which I am really pleased about.

Over all this is a good method and try however I do want to recify my mistakes to see what the piece would look like bended completely in.

Gelatine from the flat piece.

I really cannot get to grips for using gelatine in flat piece moulds. For some reason they always fall apart from being too thin or have thick edges from being too thick. I used grease paint on top of the gelatin ehowever this gave it a very fake thick layer which didn't look natural. Over all this did not work.
