Scales Experimentation.

As I was reseraching memaids many drawings/paintings/interpratations included scales so I have tried out different ways to produce scales for the theatre to see if this is the way forward to gow ith my ariel designs.

My intial desings do not include scales however it is something I want to consider for the stage interpritation as it is something that is linked to mermaids so it is important that I look into every possible avenue to achiece the best possible result.

Analysis.

I think these look really effective from a far as seen in the top left image, however they are not very quick to apply which means they could not be applied all over which I think would loose the impact of scales when you see them. I also feel they look very flat against the skin. Because of the slower applyication time this would not make it suitable for theatre as this a very fast paced and enerjectic context. More texture could have been used to make it look more 3D as it isn't jumping off the body like I had hoped.

Adding highlighting products.

Mac Strobe liquid.

This did not work as I applied it on dry aqua paint, instead of applying a shine over the top it removed all the paintwork put into the scales and left a patchy wet looking clumpy residue.

Aqurelle, sliver.

This was really nice and packed with shimmer as when the light catches it it has a irridecent look which worked really well on the scales, however it covered the white highlighting rather than enhacning it so the placement would needed to be altered.

Look Beauty, Glow  and Go Highlighter.

This is not suitable it was very clumpy to apply and a little went a long way which made it very hard to use the right amount without it removing the aquacolours underneathe. The shine under the light was lovely a perl-like however this didn't outway the clumpt texture and not drying quality.

Nars Blush, Albotros.

I wasn't expecting this too work as well as I thought being a powder but it was one of my favourites. The powder meant it didn't lift off the colour underneathe it just added to the white lighting it giving it an extra dimention when photographed. This only downside is in strong light it isn't as impactual as the sliver but it worked with the scale shape and style much better.

Body paitning.

Orange packaging.

Here I am looking at creating scale using a stenciling technique and I have chosen to use eyeshadow with it as the painting produced a very harsh look, whereas this is very soft and eaiser to build up the colour.I won't be using this technique on reflection I do no want to include scales into my design this time.

Other larger holed packaging.

This didn't work wit the eyeshadow as it mergerd very easily into one big blue mess as you can see below. This size may be mor suited to wet products and I won't be using this technique.
