Theatrical Hair trials -Ariel, Weft making & sculpting.

Weft 1 Analysis.

As this is to sit on a headband I chose to do flat weft as I prefer the final outcome and it would allso me to attatch it to band easily for a fuller looking piece. In total this took 6 1/2 hours which is quiet a long time reflecting on it, I then decided to work with set time of weaving for piece 2 (below) as this made me work more time effecively. I have a few fly aways which are from when I tightened the hair and the point end was too short pulling back through the weave.

Weft 2 Analysis.

I was alot quicker and neater this time as I had already produced one stip of weft work, I felt that I had gotten used to the synthetic hair aswell which meant I felt more confident handling it. I learnt from my mistake of the fly aways from weft one and have significantly reduced the amount on this weft which I am happy with. This will be the top weft attached to the band.

Flower Sculpting.

Real Hair Trial.

This was alot harder than what I though it was going to be, the dolly head's hair is very unsmooth and fly away so the outcome wasn't as clean as I'd hoped. Next time I need to consider applying more smoothing ans shine products to achieve to clean result. The actual process is very quick to do, learnt through my research on youtube.

Attaching wefts to the band.

This was alot tricker than what I expected once the first few pointed were attatched it became easier however the first few were really difficult to get and hold in the same position. I stitched the end around the band on a single weft then at regular intervals to secure it as I didn't want it to have any movement. I then repeated the same with the second weft. But as you can see from the image sits really well against the band.

Synthetic hair Trial.

Trying this on synthetic hair was very different to the real hair I had trialed it on, it became very fly away if you caught it which as you can see happened alot, I tried to correct it and used hair spray to help (picture on the right) which has got rid of some of the hairspray hpwever this just sat on the hair and made it sticky. I really do like this method though and for the theatrical context it would be very easy to produce without taking lots of time.

Model's Trial.

This was so much quicker and easier to produce a smooth percise flower. I barely had to use as much freeze spray as I did on the real hair block which meant it could still be manipulated when rolled into the flower making it perfect to adjust to how I wanted it. The only part I am going to change is the positioning, at the moment they are sitting a little too far back so I will shorted the length of the parting so they sit forward against where the crown will sit.

Curl comparison.

Beach Waves.

I like how this is mimiking the ripples in the sea and when people look at it initally the always think striaght away memaids, which helps to convey who she is as I am not putting scales/gills on her.  It brings out the colours in her hair which will help blend the chingon into her natrual tones. I have no control over the size of the waves in the hair they are all the same and sit in uniformity.

I think this is more suitable for theatre as you can tell characteristics of the character from afar just but this style of hair.

Curling wand.

This is a softer more subtle curl which I can create as tight or as loose as I require which gives me more control and less uniformity which I really like.

I think this suits my design of the film context as I can create tighter curls to minick the historical element running through her look.
